A section of the garbage mound at the Davao City Sanitary Landfill in Barangay New Carmen collapsed on 20 May 2026 after heavy rains, killing two people, injuring two and leaving one missing; 123 homeowners and their dependents were evacuated. DENR-Davao suspended the landfill from 22 May, noting it received about 786 tons of waste a day and had been served a notice of violation on 19 March for operating without a discharge permit. After the city dumped uncollected garbage outside the DENR-XI office on 6 June, EMB condemned the act as unlawful. On 17 June DENR-11 ordered the permanent closure of the old landfill and a Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan within 30 days, and an interim cell at the adjacent new landfill was declared ready on 18 June.
